I designed New Horizons to serve as an entry into sweater-making for anyone who loves to knit, is experienced with colorwork and has just been too scared to try a sweater. “It’s too hard,” you say. “It will take too long,” you say. “What if I mess it up?” you ask yourself. I feel you—all those doubts and more crossed my mind before I started making sweaters. But what if it’s not as hard as you thought? What if it doesn’t take as long? And what if you get it right? Read that last one again out loud and allow positivity to propel you forward. It's super empowering to create something you thought you couldn’t but realize you totally can if you just begin. This sweater features simple colorwork and a minimalist approach to its construction to help you build confidence. I hope it inspires you to reach your own New Horizons.
Construction
This sweater is worked in the round seamlessly from the top down.
Sizes
Instructions for each size in this pattern are indicated throughout as follows: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) [7, 8, 9, 10]. It is written for a full chest circumference measuring 30 (34, 38, 42, 46, 50) [54, 58, 62, 66]”/75 (85, 95, 105, 115, 125) [135, 145, 155, 165] cm, and is designed to be worn with approximately 0.5” (1.5 cm) of negative ease to 3.5” (9 cm) of positive ease. Modeled photos shown on a 38” (95 cm) full chest circumference with no ease.
Please note that sizes 8—10, as outlined above, have not been tested for this pattern. I continue to welcome testers for these sizes and appreciate the extra time and work that goes into knitting them. Suggested Needles
US 5 (3.75 mm), or size needed to meet stockinette and stranded colorwork gauge: 16” (40 cm) circular needles; 24” (60 cm) circular needles; and preferred needles for small circumference knitting.
US 4 (3.5 mm), or size needed to meet ribbing gauge: 16” (40 cm) circular needles, 24” (60 cm) circular needles; and preferred needles for small circumference knitting.
Gauge
20 sts and 34 rnds (blocked) per 4” (10 cm) stockinette square using larger needles
21 sts and 28 rnds (blocked) per 4” (10 cm) square in the stranded pattern using larger needles
22 sts = 4” (10 cm) and 9 rnds = 1” (2.5 cm) in 1 x 1 ribbing stretched using smaller needles
Yarn
Worsted weight yarn in four colors. If your gauge is different than what is called for in the pattern, yardage will vary.
